CPC REPAIR PROCESS

What is a BGA?

There are many challenges to overcome with these CPCs due to the poor quality of manufacturing used during production. The CPU used on these boards is a BGA (Ball Grid Array) package format, which are electronic components that have a grid of balls on the underside that make connections with a PCB (Printed Circuit Board). These components are often used in high-density applications and are known for their reliability and compact size, but they require high cost equipment and can be difficult to repair.

Killer Oxidation

One common issue that requires BGA repair is pad oxidation, which occurs when the pads on the PCB that connect to the BGA component become corroded or otherwise damaged. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including manufacturing process, lead free solder, exposure to moisture, heat, or other environmental conditions. Pad oxidation can lead to poor electrical connections and may cause the BGA component to fail or malfunction.

Assembly

To repair pad oxidation, technicians will use specialized equipment to remove the BGA chip and clean the PCB and chip pads using specialized cleaning fluxes, and then “reball” the chip with new lead solder balls before it is then reinstalled on the board. This process can be complex and requires a high level of skill and precision, as even small mistakes can lead to further damage or failure of the BGA component.

Coating Problems

Conformal coating has to be removed from the board to allow for proper repair, if the coating is not removed, it gets cooked into a black mess that holds the other components in place on the board as it is heated and cooled during the BGA reflow process, causing a huge amount of components to lose connection to the board. Many other repair facilities have attempted to repair these with poor results, either from the stripper used to remove the coating doing damage to the components or due to trying to do the repair without removing the coating. We have developed our own test equipment to detect and diagnose these problems across the whole board in minutes, allowing us to efficiently repair almost every board we get.

Robotic Testing

Common problems from these repairs include the CPC4 showing up as a 2007 CPC2, the module getting stuck in a boot loop and unable to function, throttle input errors, CPC hardware fault being logged, the inability to program the CPC etc. With our custom tools, we are able to identify the cause and repair these and more faults quickly, so don’t hesitate to let us look at your board from other repair shops.

PCB Pad repair

And lastly because of the cheap materials used during manufacturing, the solder resist can flake off some of these PCBs, which usually takes hours of tedious work to repair by hand. We have developed out own solder resist process using a laser to cut through the cured resist back down to the pads. This makes these units cost effective to repair as well
